Before he was assassinated, Dr. King's disapproval rating in a Gallup poll was 63%. It fell continuously AFTER he won the Nobel Peace Prize. We have this sanitized version of our history, where we imagine that there were bad guys and a lot of good guys, and then the good guys won. It wasn't that easy, and this wasn't very long ago. We all think that we would have been one of the good guys--but that just isn't the case.⁣

Y'all, we have so many more edifices to restructure. ⁣

It won't be easy, and it certainly won't always be popular. But if we seek to practice true compassion, it's work worth doing. ⁣

No marketing, no hashtags here. If you happen to stumble across this message, please take a moment to reflect on how you treat your neighbor. Your Black neighbor. Your immigrant neighbor. Your disabled neighbor. Your poor neighbor. And yeah, your neighbor who doesn't think the same things you think. Have you let your heart get so terribly hard? That doesn't mean we all have to agree--but it does mean that there's an inherent worth that comes along with being human, and if you've forgotten that, then you've lost a little bit of your own humanity. ⁣

Maybe take a minute to get it back.

✨This year has been difficult beyond measure. ⁣
So many of us have been stretched to our limit and beyond. We have dug deep into strength we didn't know we had. We have learned to appreciate the things that matter. ⁣
⁣
We're a business with a commitment to our artisan partners, and that commitment comes first, before anything else we do. We've committed to fair pay, stable wages, and consistent work. This was the first year in a long time that those commitments became challenges. ⁣
⁣
As our business has grown, the co-operative in Tanzania has also grown, which means more artisans and more families who depend on American business. With so many of our spring orders cancelled, this meant that for the first time in years, we didn't have consistent work to offer. ⁣
⁣
There are no unemployment payments in Tanzania. Every day, we reckon with the stakes of the work we do. Nothing is undertaken lightly. We work with smart, talented, capable people who have chosen to work with us. To work in a co-op requires trust, and we weren't about to squander that trust. So we chose to send the money that we would have sent anyway as payment for orders. Thousands and thousands of dollars.

We've been proud of the way we've adapted this year, making face masks and moving more business online and spacing things out at the workshop so folks could work safely. ⁣
⁣
But mostly, I'm proud that in the year when we had the least to give, we gave the most. We gave our first scholarship to a co-op member attending college. We paid for lots and lots of medical bills. We gave away thousands of reusable masks. We had a month where we literally donated every cent we sold to the co-op. ⁣
⁣
Are we better off at the end of the year than we were at the start of 2020? Nope! Like a lot of the world, no, we are not. ⁣
⁣
But we continue to honor these commitments to dignity and respect for another day. Another month. Another year. ⁣
⁣
Thank you for your support this year. So many of you chose to spend your dollars with us, when so many had fewer dollars to spend. Every purchase, every kind word, every prayer has made the difference. May 2021 bring light and love and health and abundance to us all. ❤️

Our happy little store in Downtown Wilmington will be open through the 23rd, but if you're a Wilmingtonian and you want to avoid venturing out, get your orders in before 10 tomorrow and we will drop them safely right on your doorstep! If you want to come to the store, we are taking all precautions and Miranda will help you select the perfect gift. ⁣
